The Public Performance Board (PPB) of Sri Lanka had originally cleared the film for local screenings with an "Adults Only" rating in April 2006.
Despite being banned domestically, Aksharaya received international attention and was screened at major film festivals, including those in . It was partially funded by the French organization Fonds Sud Cinema , highlighting its status as a significant piece of world cinema.
