Legend says that Sambandar composed these verses in Madurai to cure a severe illness afflicting the Pandya King, . Despite the king's conversion to Jainism, the Queen and Chief Minister, who were staunch Shaivites, invited Sambandar to help. Sambandar applied sacred ash from the Madurai temple while singing these verses, miraculously healing the king and restoring his faith in Shaivism.
